Traces

Some rhetorics call us to the idealistic images of the past or future, and they try to shape the whole society with these images. This teleological rhetoric that is either prospective or retrospective, creates a kind of cultural hegemony by using hatred. States not only use legal sanctions and deterrence policies, but they also entrench upon our “visual perception” and “equal right for aesthetic pleasure.” We can see this in the images of the hijacked landscapes.

An artist is left with many traces after being exposed to political, social, cultural pressures during her/his life. “Traces” is trying to make these residues on language, city, history, time, and memory visible. We believe that the significance of the cultural landscape in life can show up under the heavy burden of cultural hegemony through the process of artistic remembering.

The works in the exhibition suggest new perspectives through the notion of “trace“. They remind the power of art under the rapid flow of digital images. Then, we can tell the central question of the exhibition: How could we reveal the cultural hegemony, problematize it, and make it visible?
